Why tax PDFs need splitting
Tax documents rarely arrive one form per file. Payroll portals export every W-2 copy in one PDF, brokerages bundle several 1099 forms into a single consolidated statement, and tax software saves the whole return, with every schedule and worksheet, as one long file. Canadian employers and payroll services do the same with T4 and T4A slips.
Often you need only part of it: one schedule for a mortgage application, the W-2 copy for a state return, or the slip from one employer when you had two. This tool builds a new PDF with just those pages, without uploading forms full of Social Security or Social Insurance numbers.
How to extract a tax form
- Open the combined PDF and find the forms you need. Use your viewer's page counter, not the form's own page labels.
- Choose the file above.
- Type the pages, e.g. 3-4 for a two-page schedule or 1,5 for two separate slips.
- Press Run. Repeat for each form you want as its own file.
Common examples
W-2 with several copies: the PDF often holds Copy B (for your federal return), Copy C (for your records) and Copy 2 (for state or local returns), one per page. Extract each as its own file if a preparer or state portal asks for them separately.
Consolidated 1099 from a brokerage: one statement can hold 1099-DIV, 1099-INT and 1099-B sections across many pages. Extract the summary pages for a quick review, or one section for whoever needs it.
A completed return: pull out a single schedule, such as Schedule C for self-employment income or Schedule E for rental income, when a lender or business partner asks for that schedule only.
T4 and T4A slips (CRA): split a multi-slip PDF so each employer's slip is a separate file, which makes record keeping and uploads easier.
Before you send anything
Lenders and tax authorities each have their own document rules, and some want the full signed return rather than individual schedules. Check what is required before you send a partial set. This tool only separates pages. It does not change, fill or sign forms.
Keep the original PDF too. Tax records usually have to be kept for several years, and the complete original is the copy to keep.
Privacy for sensitive numbers
Tax forms carry Social Security numbers, Social Insurance numbers, employer IDs and income details. On this page they are processed entirely in your browser and are never uploaded, logged or stored.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split every page of a tax PDF into its own file at once?
Yes. Use Split into Pages (ZIP) with 1 page per file, then keep the pages you need.
Will the extracted form look the same?
Yes. Pages are copied, not re-printed, so text and printed barcodes look exactly as in the original. If a form has fillable fields, fill it in and save it before you extract pages.
My tax software PDF has hundreds of pages. Is that a problem?
No. Nothing is uploaded, so the only limit is your device memory. Large returns open in a few seconds on a typical computer.
Does this work for state, provincial or other countries' forms?
Yes. It works with any PDF, so state returns, Quebec RL slips, UK Self Assessment printouts and other regional forms work the same way.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. It is free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limits.
